Islamic government remains Pas’ goal

Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang says the party has never wavered on the issue

PUTRAJAYA, NST: Less than three months after DAP threatened to pull out of Pakatan Rakyat if Pas insisted on forming an Islamic administration, the latter has again said that this remained its goal.

Pas president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang was quoted by the party’s website as saying that its stand on this would not change.

“Islam’s laws can never be altered. There are pre-conditions that must be fulfilled before the syariah is implemented. However, there is no compulsion for non-Muslims, and Islamic law will be implemented when the time comes,” Hadi said.

Muslim theocracy would not change although the party adopted the “welfare state” approach in last year’s general election campaign, he said.

Hadi claimed that Pas had succeeded in changing non-Muslims’ perceptions of Islam and in removing the barriers between Muslims and non-Muslims.

DAP in January threatened to pull out of Pakatan Rakyat if Pas insisted on implementing Muslim theocracy, including the hudud.

This was in the wake of a statment by Pas vice-president Datuk Husam Musa on Dec 21 that the party had never forgotten its struggle to implement Islamic laws in the country.

DAP chairman Karpal Singh said this was the party’s stand although other leaders had been quiet on this divisive subject.

“This is not my personal view but that of the party. No senior leaders in the DAP have contradicted me so far,” Karpal had said before taking his party seniors to task for not speaking up on the issue.
