KENINGAU: Three blocks of factory workers’ quarters along Patikang Road here were destroyed by fire on Sunday afternoon leaving about 500 occupants homeless.
DESTROYED IN FIRE: Three blocks of workers’ quarters, including a canteen were destroyed during the afternoon fire.
The 2.30pm incident completely destroyed the double storey wooden building of Focus Lumber and all items, including important documents belonging to foreign occupants working at the factory.
No casualty was reported and the cause of the fire was still under investigation.
Two engines and 10 personnel from the district Fire and Rescue Department arrived at the scene after receiving a distress call.
The fire was extinguished in two hours and prevented from spreading to nearby buildings. Several occupants said the three blocks had 74 rooms and a canteen.
Upon seeing the fire, all the occupants ran to the main road for safety.
“There was nothing we could do to save what we owned. All the properties, including documents, were destroyed in the fire because it spread quickly to all the blocks,” they said, adding they were grateful there was no casualty.
Many of the occupants worked at the factory and were not sure where they could find a place to stay.
They hope their employer, who is believed to be away, would provide them with a place.
Meanwhile, district police chief DSP Zahari Mohamed who was at the scene with other policemen, urged the fire victims, especially their children, not to go near the area as the fire was not completely put out and could be dangerous.
“Do not let your children roam around the area to find something. It is too dangerous,” he advised.
Losses have not been ascertained yet.
