Mandela grief at great grand-daughter’s funeral
Nelson Mandela attended the funeral of his great-granddaughter after she was killed in a car crash on the eve of the World Cup.
The 91-year-old looked frail and leaned on a walking stick at the service for Zenani Mandela in Johannesburg.
Zenani, 13, was killed in a horrific car smash while travelling home from the World Cup’s opening concert last Thursday.
Mandela was wrapped up from the cold in a black coat and wore a corsage of pink roses for the funeral at the private school she attended.
The anti-apartheid icon was then ferried to the chapel in a golf buggy and sat on the front pew.
He was joined by his wife Graca Machel, ex-wife Winnie Mandela and grandson Mandla Mandela.
Naomi Campbell said in a video message that she considered Zenani a goddaughter and remembered playing with the child.
“I was truly blessed to have been able to say that we walked and laughed and got to play dress-up,” she said. “She will remain in my heart forever.”
More than 500 members of the public watched the service - which followed a private family burial.
Police say a close family friend who was driving the car that crashed on a highway and could be charged with drink-driving and homicide.
