‘Kpg Tabuan Lot fire survivors could be given houses or flats’

September 3, 2010, Friday

KUCHING: Santubong MP Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar yesterday revealed that the Sarawak Housing Development Corporation (SHDC) would provide houses or flats to the survivors of a recent pre-dawn blaze at Kampung Tabuan Lot.

GIVING HELP: Wan Junaidi (left) and wife Datin Feona give assistance to a fire survivor.

He said the corporation had agreed to build 20 houses for the 11 families of 101 persons for temporary or permanent use.

However, if they could find a better and more comfortable place such as a flat in Taman Sepakat Jaya in Demak, they would move the families.

“We are having further discussion with the corporation on this matter. They are considering moving the families to the flat as that place is more comfortable and complete with public facilities like kindergarten, school and hall.

“In fact, I had just received RM200,000 from the Ministry of Finance for the hall’s renovation,” he told reporters when visiting the fire victims at the incident’s site yesterday.

He also disclosed that the Santubong Service Centre had set up an emergency working committee to help the fire victims.

During the visit, he also handed over RM23,500 to the families.

The Welfare Service Department, Beras Nasional (Bernas), Pertubuhan Kebajikan Islam Malaysia (Perkim) Kuching Branch, Kuching Scouts Association, and DNC Asiatic Holding also handed over their donations.

The fire occurred around 5.30am on Aug 28. There was no casualty as most of the affected families were already awake to prepare for ‘sahur’ and were able to flee.

However, the speed at which the flames engulfed the small cluster of wooden houses meant that none of the survivors were able to save any of their personal belonging.

The starting point of the fire was believed to be an abandoned house in the centre of the cluster — allegedly a favourite hangout spot for glue-sniffing youths — which had been unoccupied for the past five years.

All of the survivors are now temporarily sheltered by their relatives nearby.(Memang bagus yb membantu rakyat disitu cuma adakah ia benar-benar dilaksanakan atau sebaliknya harap terlaksanalah kenyataan media oleh yb )
